Location: City Of London

As part of the HKA team you can expect:

  • A strong collaborative culture focused on growing the Forensic Technical Services (FTS) practice and our team together.
  • The opportunity to be part of driving the future success and development of our International FTS business.
  • The ability to work with leaders who support your career development, providing mentoring and exposure to complex projects, and supporting your ambitions.
The Opportunity:

HKA is seeking to recruit an ambitious and experienced Associate Technical Director or Technical Director to join the already well-established team as part of the development of the business. This is an excellent opportunity for you if you are interested in moving into a forensic dispute consultancy or if you already have experience and have an appetite for excelling your career with a world renowned disputes consultancy practice, alternatively if you are currently an experienced Senior Engineer or Associate in a design consultancy looking for that next step to challenge you intellectually.

The FTS team has grown in both size and workload and this presents exciting opportunities for the successful candidate working on projects both in the UK and Internationally based from our London office.

Whilst the ideal candidate will have a keen interest in breaking into Expert Witness work or have already had experience assisting an Expert, we provide full training and support for the specific aspects of forensic work that an engineer from design consultancy may not have been exposed to. A willingness to learn and adapt will be rewarded with intellectual challenge, fascinating insights into disputes, and a hugely varied and interesting workload.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive technical support to appointed experts on projects ranging from smaller expert commissions to large, complex and multi‑disciplinary matters, including:
    • carrying out detailed structural modelling and precise calculation work,
    • reviewing documents and drawings,
    • attending site visits, and
    • carrying out independent research in technical literature.
  • Assisting in the coordination of information and workflow.
  • Assisting with writing of technical reports.
  • Working actively with colleagues in the Structural team in providing an integrated source of expert level industry knowledge and expertise.
  • Communicating in an advisory capacity to legal teams and clients on Structural Engineering related issues.
  • Actively contributing to business development initiatives and assisting the team with the development and expansion of client relationships.
Requirements:
  • MSc or MEng in Structural and/or Civil Engineering or other relevant field, recognised by the Engineering Council UK. Excellent academic record.
  • Chartered with Engineering Council and a Member of either the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the latter preferred.
  • Extensive experience (at least ten years) in building structures design, including both reinforced concrete and structural steel design.
  • Technical excellence in structural analysis including use of software and knowledge of British and European codes of practice.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to proactively problem solve, often thinking outside of conventional or code‑based approaches.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in structural site inspections, refurbishment of existing buildings, and design of remedial works solutions are preferred.
  • Experience of working on technical disputes or in forensic investigations is a plus.
  • Experience of international large scale projects is a plus.
  • An appetite to support with identifying, developing and securing consultancy fee earning work.
