Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
Job Purpose / Overview
The Environmental Arrangements Engineer will support the Environmental Arrangements Lead in the development, implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System and ISO
14001 accreditation for the Sizewell C (SZC) Project. The Environmental Arrangements Engineer will have support across a number of environmental topic areas and cross cutting arrangements that will support the continuous environmental improvement of the SZC Project. This role will involve supporting other function within the business to develop specific arrangements for key environmental aspects and impacts; including, but not limited to auditing, investigation and procurement.
These arrangements and the ISO
14001 accreditation will enable SZC to demonstrate compliance and best practice in environmental performance throughout the construction phase of the project.
The role will involve may involve interfacing with the Environment Agency and other regulators as required, as well as stakeholders on site within site delivery teams and the Civil Works Alliance (CWA). It may also involve working with site contractors and associated project teams as required to define processes and procedures for the management of environmental compliance as part of site-based activities.
Principal Accountabilities include:
Deputising for the Environmental Arrangements Lead.
Supporting the management and maintenance of SZC ISO
14001 accreditation, including the preparation for and participation in surveillance audits.
Supporting the development of appropriate arrangements and management plans to ensure compliance on the SZC construction site and other areas of the project.
Helping to ensure that work packages defined for early works, enabling works, Associated Developments and Main Construction include relevant environmental and sustainability requirements within design and contracts.
Supporting Incident Reporting, Design Change and Procurement as appropriate, to help ensure environmental, and sustainability requirements are considered.
In the lead up to the ISO
14001 audit, carrying out environmental inspections of site activities and supporting the implementation of environmental performance measurement, review, and reporting requirements.
Being a point of contact for the SZC Environmental Management System and helping to ensure, through its implementation, that the effects of the activities of the construction site conform to SZC's environmental policy and associated objectives and targets.
Supporting the wider Environmental Consenting and Assurance function with arrangements for technical environmental topic areas.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
Essential
An understanding of the requirements and arrangements needed to deliver compliance with environmental permits, licences, and consents.
Strong Problem Solving and Organisational Skills, with the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
Must be able to work independently and demonstrate excellent communication/interpersonal and influencing skills.
A well-developed skillset with regards to the communication with a variety of stakeholders.
Accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to see projects through from start to finish.
Desirable
Knowledge of sustainability, and other relevant processes and procedures which will require environmental input (e.g. investigations, incident management, procurement).
Strong assurance and challenge skills with excellent communication/interpersonal skills notably with various levels of the organisation and externally.
Qualifications & Experience Essential
Degree qualified or equivalent in an environmental, science or related discipline.
Experience of operating within an Environmental Management System (EMS) conforming to recognised standards (BS EN ISO
14001:2015), including supporting the development of procedures to meet the requirements of the EMS.Desirable
Experience managing environmental issues on a large infrastructure/engineering project.
Experience developing relationships or working with regulators.
