£55,000 to £60,000 + £6,825 Car Allowance + Bonus + Benefits
You're already capable of commissioning a BMS. The question is whether you want to keep commissioning somebody else's project, or start taking ownership of the project itself. This BMS Project Engineer role gives you responsibility for smaller controls projects from start to finish, while keeping you close to the engineering. You'll create the programme, coordinate subcontractors, deal with procurement and technical submissions, solve engineering issues and take the job through commissioning, witnessing and client handover.
So if you want more project responsibility but don't want to swap engineering for a desk, this could be a worthwhile next step.
As the BMS Project Engineer, you'll own the delivery of smaller projects rather than being responsible for just one stage of them. At the front end, you could be developing the programme of works, procuring controls equipment, sizing valves and producing Descriptions of Operation, equipment schedules, RFIs and technical submittals. You'll produce IO wiring diagrams for panel design and review what comes back from the panel shop.
You'll then remain hands-on as the project moves onto site, carrying out point-to-point checks, terminations, panel and wiring modifications and DDC commissioning. You'll coordinate subcontractors, attend progress meetings and work directly with clients to resolve technical or engineering issues. Importantly, you'll see your projects through. That means keeping the as-commissioned information accurate, getting witnessing packs signed off and taking the finished system through demonstration and client handover.
THIS ROLE COULD BE BETTER
For the right BMS engineer, the attraction isn't simply a different employer. It's a broader level of responsibility. If you're currently working as a Commissioning Engineer and are ready for the next step, you can build experience across:
- Project ownership, programmes and subcontractor coordination
- Procurement, panel design information and technical submissions
- Client communication, commissioning, witnessing and handover
You won't have to give up the technical work to gain that responsibility. You'll still commission and troubleshoot BMS systems, working with technology including Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens or ALC and using your knowledge of Niagara-based systems. That combination makes the role particularly relevant if your longer-term development means becoming a stronger all-round BMS Project Engineer, with both engineering depth and experience delivering projects.
ESSENTIALSThis isn't intended to be someone's first BMS engineering position. You'll need solid BMS commissioning experience with at least one of Trend, Tridium, Schneider, Siemens or ALC, plus knowledge of Niagara-based systems. You'll also need a good understanding of HVAC, electrical competence and the ability to interpret and alter existing BMS control strategies. Just as importantly, you need to be ready for the wider responsibility that comes with a BMS Project Engineer position.
You'll be coordinating information, subcontractors and clients alongside delivering the engineering itself.
More ownership also means more accountability. When an engineering problem affects the programme, you won't simply identify it and pass it on. As the BMS Project Engineer, you'll be involved in coordinating what happens next. You'll be balancing commissioning with programmes, procurement, technical documentation, subcontractors, client requirements and health and safety responsibilities. There is also a significant geographic footprint. Projects are located throughout London and the wider South East, including the surrounding Home Counties, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire.
You'll need to be comfortable travelling between project sites across that territory.
The development opportunity here is practical: increasing the amount of a BMS project you are capable of owning. If you already have the commissioning background, this role can give you direct experience managing smaller projects from start to finish. That adds programme management, procurement, technical submissions, subcontractor coordination and client-facing delivery to your existing engineering capability. You may also supervise junior engineers and provide technical support to other members of the team.
