Treasurer – Disability Advocacy Charity

Join to apply for the Treasurer role at Stay Safe East. We are a Deaf and Disabled Person's Organisation advocating for disabled victims of abuse and crime in London.

About the Organisation

Stay Safe East is a small but dedicated charity that empowers disabled individuals to protect themselves and seek justice. As a volunteer‑based organisation, we rely on the support of committed trustees to ensure we remain well‑run and compliant.

About the Role

The Treasurer is a vital post on the trustee Board. Though we are a small organisation, a hands‑on Treasurer is essential for maintaining robust financial systems, guiding strategic growth, and supporting business and fundraising initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Finance Officer, Operations Manager, and CEO to oversee financial matters.
  • Approve and present payments, budgets, accounts, and financial statements.
  • Ensure that financial resources meet current and future needs and that appropriate reserve policies are in place.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Board, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements (Charity Commission, funders).
  • Maintain financial policies, procedures and controls.
  • Liaise with staff and volunteers about financial matters.
  • Advise on the financial implications of strategic plans.
  • Ensure accounts are scrutinised appropriately (audit, independent examination) and implement recommendations.
  • Keep the Board informed of financial duties and responsibilities.
  • Support the fundraising strategy.
  • Make a formal presentation of the accounts at the Annual General Meeting.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Financial qualifications and experience.
  • Experience in charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes.
  • Ability to analyse proposals and examine financial consequences.
  • Willingness to provide ad‑hoc advice and support to staff.
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: self‑lessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to speak their mind.
  • Strategic vision, independent judgement and creativity.
  • Ability to work in a trauma‑informed way and to demonstrate kindness.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
  • A commitment to the organisation.
