Role summary
Reporting to the Economic Policy Manager, the Senior Policy Adviser will support the development and delivery of the CBI’s economic policy work, helping to ensure that the voice of business is reflected in government policy and that CBI recommendations are grounded in strong evidence and member insight.
The role will contribute to the CBI’s work around major fiscal events, including Budgets and Spending Reviews, as well as wider economic policy projects focused on strengthening business investment and delivering sustainable economic growth across the UK.
The Senior Policy Adviser will undertake research and analysis, develop policy recommendations, engage with CBI members and external stakeholders, and produce high-quality written materials for government, members and wider audiences. They will work closely with colleagues across the Policy and Economics Directorates to understand the economic and fiscal implications of policy proposals and help build the evidence base underpinning the CBI’s positions.
The successful candidate will have a strong interest in economics and public policy, strong analytical and communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively and y will be intellectually curious, comfortable working with quantitative and qualitative evidence, and motivated by using economic analysis and business insight to influence public policy.
The role consists of the following activities with estimated proportions:
- Economic policy development and analysis (~40%)
- Member and stakeholder engagement (~30%)
- Fiscal events, communication and project delivery (~30%)
This is a 12-month Fixed Term Contract. This role sits within payband 4, with a salary ranging from £42,577 to £52,000 per annum depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities
Support the development of economic policy on behalf of CBI members and business
- Undertake research and analysis to support the development of CBI positions and recommendations on economic policy.
- Develop evidence-based policy recommendations, drawing together economic analysis, external research and insight from CBI members.
- Work with policy colleagues, tax specialists, and economists across the CBI to understand the economic and fiscal impact of policy proposals and support the development of a strong economic evidence base.
- Monitor developments in the economy, public finances and wider policy landscape, identifying emerging issues and their implications for businesses.
- Support the use of microeconomic analysis in policy development across the CBI, helping colleagues assess the costs, benefits and wider economic impacts of policy interventions.
- Work with colleagues across the UK regions and nations to ensure economic policy development reflects different business experiences across the country.
Support the delivery of the CBI’s fiscal events process and policy development
- Support the Economic Policy Manager and the Economic Policy team’s Principal Economist in coordinating the CBI’s work ahead of Budgets and Spending Reviews.
- Work with policy and tax teams to develop and assess proposals for inclusion in CBI fiscal submissions, helping ensure recommendations are well evidenced and reflect the economic and fiscal context.
