The Role

We supervise barristers, chambers, BSB entities and organisations that provide postgraduate Bar training and pupillage.

The work we do is designed to:

  • protect and promote the public interest and the interests of consumers;
  • proactively identify risks and take appropriate action to prevent them from materialising;
  • encourage more effective risk management by those we regulate and improvements in the level and consistency of compliance with our regulatory requirements;
  • target our resources at those organisations, individuals or areas that present the highest risk to our regulatory objectives;
  • evaluate the effectiveness of our regulatory policy.

We adopt a risk‑based approach, in line with our Risk Framework.

An important part of the work that we do is proactive, such as gathering information to support our assessment of risk, conducting sample checks of compliance with our regulations and conducting thematic reviews on areas of focus in our strategic plans. This part of our work plays an important role in enabling the BSB to foster a constructive relationship with those we regulate and other stakeholders, to achieve appropriate outcomes, resulting in less enforcement action and better protection and promotion of consumers' interests.

Other work that we do is reactive, responding to reports to the BSB from stakeholders including barristers, pupils, members of the public and other regulators about concerns they have. We also work closely with colleagues across the BSB on areas of regulatory policy development. Examples of this can be seen in our current business plan on our website.

The work is varied and interesting, and involves engaging with a wide range of people and organisations. The team is collaborative and supportive, whether working from the office or at home.

You will be required to communicate confidently and professionally with a range of external stakeholders, as well as with colleagues across the BSB.

Full details of the role requirements, and role specification can be viewed in the job description.
