Job Description & How to Apply Below

Improve local housing standards and protect resident health across our borough.

We are looking for 2x Housing and Health Practitioners to join the team and play key roles in ensuring every private rented property offers a safe, decent and secure place to live. It’s a role with genuine frontline impact – a chance to tackle poor housing conditions and protect the health, safety and welfare of local residents.

Working Style

You’ll be based in the Borough for three days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community, with two days working flexibly from home. Whether you’re out inspecting properties, leading community days of action, or working collaboratively with internal teams, you’ll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.

What you’ll be doing

Your focus will be on improving standards across private rented housing and protecting local residents. A typical day will involve carrying out inspections to address critical issues like damp and mould, processing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licences, and drafting detailed schedules of work.

Your role will balance proactive community engagement with robust enforcement. You will participate in community days of action and uphold standards through the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS). In addition to handling reactive complaints, you will enforce legislation under the Renters’ Rights Act to protect residents.

Working with care, competence and fairness, you will collaborate closely with internal services like Trading Standards, as well as external partners including the police and fire brigade. When formal action is needed, you will prepare legal reports, issue enforcement notices, and present evidence at courts or tribunals.

For further details, please review the Job Description and Person Specification.

What you’ll bring

You’ll bring practical experience in private sector housing enforcement, investigating complaints, processing HMO licensing applications, and applying relevant housing legislation. You hold a Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health recognised by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (or equivalent), alongside completion of a recognised two-day HHSRS assessor training course.

You are proficient with standard office software, confident in drafting clear schedules of work, and able to manage a busy caseload efficiently. You approach your work with resilience and empathy, with the communication skills needed to build positive relationships with both landlords and residents.

Most importantly, you’re someone who excels at working collaboratively across departments, bringing fresh, innovative ideas to improve local service delivery and a strong commitment to public service values.

Why join us

At RBKC, we’re all in – investing in our people, our communities and our future.

You will receive a competitive salary alongside genuine opportunities for continuous learning and professional development. We foster a highly supportive, friendly team culture where you will benefit from a dedicated buddying scheme rather than lone working in the field.

You will join a successful team with a strong track record in joint enforcement and positive tribunal outcomes. By joining us, you will work in an environment where close collaboration across council services, emergency services and community partners is standard practice, giving you the platform to achieve real outcomes for local residents.
