About Us
The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine (FoLSM) at King's College London is one of the largest and most successful centres for biomedical research and education in the UK. The Faculty has internationally leading expertise in basic, translational and clinical research, which is deployed to inform and deliver our education programmes, enhance clinical innovation and serve our communities. King's was ranked 10th in the world for Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health in the Times Higher Rankings for 2023.
We are located at four central London campuses – Guy's, St Thomas', Waterloo and Denmark Hill, reflecting the Faculty's close alignment to our NHS partners. Assisted by our close collaboration with clinical colleagues in the King's Health Partner (KHP) Trusts and outstanding infrastructure, research is strategically aligned to KHP, where academics and clinicians ensure faster translation and adoption of the Faculty's research findings into impact directly on the clinical setting and on health outcomes for patients.
The Faculty delivers a comprehensive education and training portfolio, including undergraduate training in Medicine and Pharmacy and related BScs and an expansive postgraduate taught portfolio. It also has a comprehensive programme of initiatives to support an inclusive environment and culture, and promote diversity across our staff and student communities, as well as the leadership of the Faculty.
King's is one of the top UK universities, ranked 36th in the world (Times Higher Education World Rankings 2025) and the fourth oldest university in England, based in the heart of London. King's has over 33,000 students from over 150 countries, and over 8,500 employees. King's is in the top seven UK universities for research earnings and has an overall annual income of about £1BN (2021).

Funding for the post has been made available by the University of London, using the income from a Fund established following the sale of the South London Hospital for Women. The Hospital was founded in 1912 to meet the growing demand of women for medical treatment by members of their own sex; to provide, in addition to ordinary hospital beds, wards for women of limited means;
and to give further scope for the postgraduate training of medical women. It closed in 1985 and a substantial portion of the sale proceeds passed to the University of London. The Lectureships are named after Miss Maud Mary Chadburn who was a medical student and graduate of the University, and Founder of the Hospital where she was its Senior Surgeon until 1933.
