Overview

Every day is different working as a Health Visitor (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) with various responsibilities which include: home visits and virtual consultations for health need assessments, promoting uptake of immunisation, conducting child developmental and health reviews, running support groups for parents and working in collaboration with a range of local children agencies such as Early Years, Children Centres and Third Sector Organisations.

Applications will be accepted until 5th April 2026 for the training programme beginning in September 2026 with King’s College London and London South Bank University.

This is a training post: a 12‑month full‑time course comprising 50 % academic and 50 % clinical placement in accordance with the University, NMC and Trust regulations.

As a GSTT SCPHN student you will be allocated a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor plus additional support from the Practice Development Lead.

Your role will be part of an Agile Working System, allowing you to work flexibly in the community and be a crucial part of the healthcare team.

Post Information

The post of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies of a qualified nurse/midwife to achieve a higher level of practice, resulting in an academic qualification and a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The programme will enable SCPHN students to learn and work toward gaining the standards of proficiency for entry into the NMC register as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). In collaboration with the Universities, we are responsible for providing an adequate learning environment and creating opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to take on the role of a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse at the end of the programme.

Gaining the required knowledge, skills and competence will enable the registered SCPHN to exercise higher levels of judgment, discretion and decision‑making in clinical care, focusing on four broad areas:

  • Clinical practice
  • Community Engagement
  • Clinical practice development
  • Leadership in clinical practice
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations and completing the course successfully.
  • To work with the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice.
  • With the support of the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation.
  • To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to the chosen pathway.
  • To develop/build on skills of caseload and team leadership and management.
  • To work within University Regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct.
  • To work within employing organisation policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting.
  • To work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.
  • To proactively seek learning opportunities and be creative, adaptable and innovative in response to complexity and uncertainty.
