Medical Physicist
The Nuclear Medicine Physics team provides physics and radiation safety services. This post is based at the Royal Brompton Hospital Nuclear Medicine department (Chelsea) and also includes activities for the associated PET-CT department and Harefield Hospital Nuclear Medicine department ensuring safe clinical and scientific operation with optimal use of ionising radiation. The postholder will contribute to practical aspects including testing, radiation safety, auditing, research and development using portable gamma camera, SPECT-CT and PET-CT systems, including a state of the art CZT SPECT CT system (installed in 2024) and associated equipment for the measurement and delivery of radiopharmaceuticals and for ensuring radiation safety.
Mainduties of the job
- To work as a valued member of the Nuclear Medicine Physics team, based within the Royal Brompton Hospital Nuclear Medicine Department performing on-site activities and work at/for additional clinical group sites/ other organisations (as required) including the PET department at 77 Wimpole Street and Harefield Hospital
- To perform a range of activities involving quality control testing, auditing, research and development, image and data computer analysis/ processing and radiation safety tasks in order to contribute to safe and effective patient diagnosis and treatment, the development of clinical services and optimised use of ionising radiation.
- To provide scientific, technical and radiation safety assistance, as directed by the Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics/ RPA/ MPE/ RWA, within a defined scope of practice.
- To act as an operator as defined by IR(ME)
R for a specified range of tasks on completion of satisfactory training and competence assessment and in accordance with written procedures. The Nuclear Medicine department has an established cardiac CZT camera and SPECT-CT system and performs a range of diagnostic studies including specialist heart and lung imaging and quantification. We have recently installed a new state of the art CZT SPECT-CT system in July 2024, the first of its type in London, to provide new functionality and potential for innovative research and development projects.
We plan to commence a research study using a portable camera in late 2026.
The PET-CT department at 77 Wimpole Street has a PET-CT scanner (performing a wide range of PET studies) and a Rb82 measurement and infusion system was implemented in 2022 to enhance quantitative low dose cardiac PET (one of only a few sites in the country to perform Rb82 cardiac PET). The department has a multitude of features and devices to ensure optimal radiation safety including a semi automated dose dispensing system, hand and foot monitor and radionuclide calibrator.
