Role Overview
There is a fantastic opportunity for a staff nurse with an interest in ophthalmology to work in the Corneal and External Diseases service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. This is a 12 months fixed term contract to cover Maternity Leave.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team that assesses and cares for patients in the Corneal and External Diseases outpatient department. They will also support the nurse-led Corneal Cross-linking service at the main branch of Moorfields at City Road (Oriel).
You will be expected to provide comprehensive, ongoing care and support for patients with Corneal and External Diseases conditions. You will also be responsible for ensuring that patients receive education and information and to work closely with the senior nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
The successful candidate will be required to be flexible, enthusiastic, and committed to bringing the highest level of nursing care to patients in line with the Quality Agenda of the NHS and the Moorfields Nursing Strategy. You should be able to demonstrate good planning, organisation, and leadership skills.
Responsibilities- Experienced mentors are assigned to all new staff and there are excellent opportunities for continuing professional development., The post holder is responsible for the assessment and management of care needs of patients in the Corneal and External Diseases service. They will assess patients and implement and evaluate care provision.
- The post holder will act as a co-ordinator in the outpatient clinics ensuring patients are seen and assessed by all members of the multidisciplinary team. They will also supervise junior members of staff and students.
- The post holder will be a key member of staff in participating in the development of care of patients attending the Corneal and External Diseases service. They will be working independently/autonomously and are accountable for their own professional actions. They are responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes the dignity and human rights of patients and clients.
- Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical area, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations are central to the patients care.
- Independently manage a group of patients within the ophthalmic speciality whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct care.
- To be involved in delivering core nursing duties and assisting with the Corneal Cross-linking (CXL) procedure in both scrub and circulating nurse roles, including setting up procedure trolleys and supporting the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) during CXL procedures.
- Responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
- Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication.
- Act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
- Ensure that patients' receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
- Recognise the significance of observations made, and use them to develop and initiate patient assessment and together with the patient and carer devise a plan of care.
- Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a person's nursing requirements.
- Carry out ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.
- Complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.
- Responsible for the educating the patient and carer on the importance of compliance with treatment and medication.
