Senior Staff Nurse – Paediatric Outpatients

Join our dynamic and friendly nursing team on our thriving Paediatric Outpatient Departments across both St Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals. You will utilise your experience caring for patients ranging from neonates to adults and collaborate with Health Care Assistants, Phlebotomists and Clinicians who provide high‑quality care to children attending our bustling Outpatient Department.

You will use your clinical skills to provide ambulatory services to a wide range of patients and work alongside specialist clinicians to build knowledge and expertise. Our teams work closely with services for children including critical care, emergency department, community nursing teams and the acute ward environments.

Undertake a career pathway of training and education individually developed for you and supported by our clinical nurse educators who often work alongside you on the ward. There are many opportunities for development such as leadership programmes, a diabetes specialist course and APLS among many others.

Your skills will be enhanced by nursing a diverse range of patients in need of paediatric medical and surgical services, including:

  • Allergy/immunology
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Infectious Diseases

We are recruiting for one full‑time permanent position and one part‑time (15 hrs) fixed‑term 1 yr maternity cover.

Main duties of the job
  • Work alongside the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver care to a wide range of paediatric patients, including general paediatrics, infectious disease and a number of other clinics.
  • Provide high‑quality, evidence‑based care across the two outpatient departments at St Mary's Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.
  • Act as a clinical expert within the scope of work.
  • Maintain continuous responsibility for the ward area, provide visible professional leadership, and support ward management in ensuring the unit complies with local and national safety guidelines.
  • Support junior team members and student nurses to ensure the delivery of high‑quality patient care.
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness of the clinical environment.
  • Champion a culture of learning and quality improvement, helping to lead and monitor nursing team performance through audit.
  • Offer individual service and psychological support to patients and families, respecting diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide specialist nursing advice to support high‑quality, individualised care without supervision, in collaboration with the MDT.
  • Work across the hospital where required as service needs change.

Person Specification
  • RSCN/RN (child)
  • Experience supervising junior staff, mentoring in practice or equivalent
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Level 3 safeguarding
  • APLS
Experience
  • Minimum of 12 months experience at Band 5 within the relevant speciality.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of change management – a positive change agent.
Skills
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Ability to lead and delegate within a ward, supervising junior staff.
  • Competency in cannulation / venepuncture.
