The key aspects identified for the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist GUM and HIV include:

  • To provide specialist clinical nursing care, support & education to new & existing clients of the Trafalgar Clinic or community/outreach based projects. This will include nurse led sexual health clinics with the use of Patient Group Directions/ Independent Nurse Prescribing to provide care at the point of contact.

    Main duties of the job
    • To work as an advanced practitioner and effectively deliver an expert nursing service within the GUM and HIV service.
    • Provide GUM and HIV specialist nursing care and advice Trust-wide including ward visits where appropriate. Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills
    • To have a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of GUM and HIV and related issues, including a comprehensive knowledge of Anti-Retro-Virals (ARV), with a commitment to keeping up to date with changing treatments in HIV.
    • To identify, manage and, where appropriate, refer patients with acute and chronic GUM and HIV-related issues to members of the multidisciplinary team.
    • To provide the results of investigations to patients when appropriate, ensuring appropriate follow up arrangements are made as necessary.
    • To be responsible for the follow up and recalling of newly diagnosed HIV patients and patients with a Positive Sexual Infection.
    • To provide health promotion and support to newly-diagnosed HIV Positive patients and patients with a Positive Sexual Infection
