Job Summary
Ground hand is the entry-level position in the Construction Department. The employee will typically work four ten‑hour shifts, though this can change. The position will also be on call periodically and may require travel out of town for jobs. The ground hand will perform heavy lifting and physical labor to work on a four‑person team to install poles, strands, fiber, or conduit to help build the network.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Perform all duties assigned
- Obtain or maintain a Class A CDL within 90 days of hire
- Obtain or maintain a flagging certificate within 90 days of hire
- Perform heavy manual labor, able to lift 70lbs on occasion
- Work as a member of a team
- Obtain or maintain a CPR card within 90 days of hire
- Use independent judgment and plan ahead
- Willing to relocate within 35 minutes of the corporate office
- Work in confined spaces such as crawlspaces, attics, underground vaults, and manholes for extended periods
- Report to the crew lead/operator/foreman
- Work collaboratively with other crews
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Excellent physical condition
- Flexible hours, overtime, and 24‑hour on‑call duty rotating basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions day or night
- Pass a medical exam and a pre‑employment drug screen
- Hand and finger dexterity to use tools and equipment as necessary
- Remain standing 80‑90% of the time
- Good vision (close, peripheral, ability to differentiate wire sizes and colors)
- Class A CDL or permit preferable; ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Flagging card preferable; training within 90 days of hire if necessary
- Ability to tolerate temperature changes and environmental dust, pollen, wind, snow, and rain
$20 – DOE plus health benefits with zero cost to employees.
