Company Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Engineer
- Structures, Data Centers
to be based in South Africa's Enterprise Capabilities office in Centurion
. This position supports a locally based team in South Africa and global teams. The role offers a flexible hybrid work arrangement.

Enterprise Capabilities (EC) is AECOM’s primary vehicle for workshare, providing technical expertise and accelerating delivery across geographic boundaries.

EC partners with regional and global Business Line project teams to deliver high‑quality, specialist services.

Job Description

Here is what you will be doing:

  • Deliver discipline involvement in projects and ensure effective delivery input of others.
  • Work on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations, drawings, reports.
  • Perform design development, design review, supervision, coordination, and design documentation.
  • Guide junior engineers and independently complete all required design work.
  • Share technical expertise via internal communication and presentations.
  • Develop high‑quality design outputs and perform hands‑on design.
  • Serve as lead engineer on small to medium‑size projects, providing specialized technical input.

Team Responsibilities:

  • Lead a design team of junior and mid‑level Structures staff, providing mentorship and direction.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure fully coordinated design deliverables.
  • Bring project teams together to achieve shared goals.
  • Hold themselves and others to high standards.
  • Coach and guide less experienced staff to increase technical competence.

Business Development:

  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Participate in preparing major bids and proposals on the technical side.
  • Technically lead aspects of projects, supporting Project Managers.
  • Use Revit, Tekla Structural Designer, ETABS, SAP
    2000, Robot, Idea Statica, and other design programmes.
  • Run a structural engineering team in a multi‑disciplinary BIM environment.
  • Interface with clients on schedules, meetings, and issues.
  • Anticipate schedule or priority delays and plan alternative actions.
  • Apply engineering principles across broad assignment areas.
  • Support digital transformation strategy and embrace change.
  • Develop design procedures for high‑quality, cost‑effective work.
  • Take responsibility for structural design and drawings.
  • Attend planning, design, and site meetings; conduct site inspections.
  • Undertake technical reviews and audits to ensure designs meet requirements.
  • Work safely, comply with HSE policies, and promote safety and integrity principles.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards and internal procedures.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Civil Engineering (Structural), preferably M.Eng or MSc.Eng.
  • At least 8 years’ experience post qualification.
  • Professionally registered with ECSA as Pr.Eng. for at least 3 years.
  • Develop key client relationships and a potential for new business.
  • Collaborative skills internally and externally.
  • Ability to advise complex matters to non‑specialists.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Work under pressure and understand delivery importance.
  • Strong analytical, literacy, and numerical skills.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise others effectively.
  • Experience with American and/or European design codes preferred.
