Principal Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Management

Our client, a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, is looking for an exceptional Principal Mechanical Engineer with specialized expertise in thermal management to join their esteemed team in Centurion, Gauteng . This senior position requires a deep understanding of thermodynamic principles and their application in designing robust and efficient systems for energy storage solutions. You will be responsible for leading complex thermal analysis projects, developing innovative cooling strategies, and ensuring the optimal performance and longevity of critical equipment.

• Lead the design, analysis, and optimization of thermal management systems for high-power energy storage devices and related equipment.
• Perform advanced thermal simulations using tools like ANSYS Fluent or COMSOL to predict and analyze heat transfer phenomena.
• Develop innovative cooling solutions, including natural convection, forced convection, liquid cooling, and phase-change materials.
• Specify materials, components, and manufacturing processes for thermal management subsystems.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, material scientists, and product managers, to integrate thermal solutions.
• Oversee experimental testing and validation of thermal designs, interpreting results and making necessary design adjustments.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of mechanical engineers focusing on thermal aspects.
• Contribute to the development of intellectual property and technical roadmaps related to thermal engineering.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and safety regulations for thermal systems.

• Ph.D. or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Heat Transfer or Thermodynamics.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with at least 5 years focused on thermal management design and analysis.
• Proven expertise in CFD modeling and simulation software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+, COMSOL).
• In-depth knowledge of heat transfer principles (conduction, convection, radiation) and phase-change phenomena.
• Experience with experimental thermal measurement techniques and equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects and mentor junior engineers.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Strong understanding of material properties relevant to thermal applications.
• Experience in the energy storage or power electronics industry is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly.
