Job GoalDuties associated with the role of Special Education Specialist align with compliance and communication within special education based upon provisions outlined in state and federal law (IDEA). This includes professional development addressing specialized instruction, processes and procedures, compliance with MET, IEP, 504, FBA, BIP, and data reporting procedures, as well as the provision of FAPE. The facilitator serves as the liaison to assigned sites and assists special education staff in troubleshooting issues related to special education.
Additionally, evaluation of classified staff supporting the special education department is required. The Special Education Specialist is flexible and adaptable with proven skills in communication, collaboration, organization, and time management.
- Master’s degree in special education, school counseling, or school psychology
- Knowledge of IDEA, the provision of FAPE, and the continuum of services in special education
- Knowledge of instructional practices that support student centered learning
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a school setting
- Current AZ Certification
- Current AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Ability to adjust based upon immediate needs
- Training and knowledge of e-IEP PRO
- Prior experience in special education
- Prior experience in leadership roles at the site and/or district level
- Experience with conflict resolution, mediation, or cognitive coaching
- Self-starter with proven ability to work independently as needed
- Provide support to district sites and special education teams to ensure complaint services and programming to meet the needs of identified students
- Establish and promote ongoing communication and collaboration with site administration and special education staff
- Assist staff in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to specialized supports for students
- Confer with sites regarding special education procedures and compliance requirements
- Address requests for site training and identify professional development needs
Remain current on research related to special education - Monitor compliance at assigned sites as related to IDEA, 504, and ADE
- Perform assigned duties related to other functions of the job
