Job Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Level 1 Trauma ICU night shift position requiring at least 3 years of recent ICU experience and Arizona or compact state licensure.
Responsibilities- Work in a Level 1 Trauma ICU within an acute care setting
- Units include Surgical ICU, Medical Cardiac ICU, and 12-bed overflow ICU, totaling 32-36 beds per unit
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2 and 1:1 depending on patient acuity
- Patient population includes trauma, neuro, post-surgical, CVA, sepsis, ARDS, cardiovascular, and COVID cases; ages 15+
- Common procedures include neuro and cardiovascular surgeries, post-cardiac surgery (including ECMO, IABP, TAVR), and titration of complex drips
- RNs interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors, with no monitor techs on unit
- Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 with equipment such as Dreager, Hamilton, Puritan Benette 840, V60s BiPAP, and Airvo
- Uses Cerner EMR; previous experience preferred but not required
- Night shifts, 12 hours in length; self-scheduling with periodic management adjustment for unit needs
- Weekend requirement of 3 shifts per 4-week schedule, with varying days by shift type
- Floating required, including to telemetry units (1:3 or 1:4 ratio) and between ICUs
- No additional call or standby shifts required
- RNs titrate a wide variety of drips including propofol, fentanyl, dilaudid, levophed, vasopressin, insulin, and more
- Units have charge nurses who do not typically take patients
- No nurse aids; sitters and health unit secretaries assist as needed
- Holiday coverage as scheduled, may have one holiday off per assignment
- Unit-specific orientation is 1-2 days and includes skill validation for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices
- Navy scrubs required
- Expect to float between three ICU areas and to telemetry as needed
- First-time travelers with the required ICU experience are welcome to apply
- Failure of required exams on the second attempt may disqualify candidate for 6 months
- Candidates with prior experience in a similarly sized ICU strongly preferred
- Active AZ RN license or compact (NLC) license required at time of consideration
- Minimum of 3 years recent ICU experience with either neuro or CV background
- Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Must pass a dysrhythmia exam within 24-48 hours prior to offer, with max two attempts
- Pass/fail simulation lab on Day 1 of orientation
- Must provide a copy of driver's license
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from the last 12 months, and one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years
- Cannot have been employed full-time, part-time, or PRN at any Common Spirit, CHI, or Dignity facilities within the past year
- Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility for Arizona positions
