JOB SUMMARY

Southwest Shipyard is seeking a skilled and dependable Boat Mechanic to join our maintenance team. The Boat Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems on marine vessels, including engines, propulsion systems, steering, and other related systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all boats serviced or operated at our shipyard.

Regular attendance and punctuality are required of all employees.

Varies by Department and/or Location.

Day Shift: 6:00am - 3:30pm

Overtime and/or Weekend Availability required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical issues on various types of marine vessels (tugs, barges, crew boats, etc.).
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel and gas engines, outboard motors, inboard systems, pumps, hydraulic systems, and generators.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems using testing equipment and manuals.
  • Repair or replace engine components, gearboxes, shafts, propellers, steering systems, and fuel systems.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations when working with hazardous materials or in confined spaces.
  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, maintenance performed, and parts used.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and schematics.
  • Collaborate with other trades (e.g., welders, electricians) on vessel overhauls and repairs.
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, and other machinery as needed for mechanical repairs.
  • Assist with haul-outs, dry dock operations, and sea trials as required.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED; technical or trade school certification preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a marine mechanic or equivalent mechanical experience.
  • Proficiency with diesel and gas engine repair, marine hydraulics, and propulsion systems.
  • Strong understanding of maritime safety standards and procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and in physically demanding environments.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Basic computer and diagnostic tool skills a plus.
  • TWIC card preferred or ability to obtain.
PHYSICAL / MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Employees in this position must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, crawling, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Climbing stairs, and/or vertical ladders of varying heights.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Lifting objects of minimum of 10lbs, with maximum single-person lift limit of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying.
