Food Safety Manager

Location: Arlington, VA

Schedule: Onsite, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Job Overview

The Food Safety Manager is responsible for owning and continuously improving all food safety and quality programs within a food manufacturing environment. This role serves as the site leader for food safety, regulatory compliance, audit readiness, and quality systems, ensuring products consistently meet or exceed customer, regulatory, and GFSI requirements. The Food Safety Manager partners closely with Operations, Sanitation, Maintenance, and Plant Leadership to embed food safety into daily production while driving a strong culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Own, manage, and enhance the site’s Food Safety and Quality programs, including SQF (Level 2 or
    3), HACCP, GMPs, allergen control, sanitation, and documentation systems.
  • Lead the Food Safety Team and HACCP Team, ensuring food safety plans are properly developed, validated, implemented, and maintained.
  • Prepare for, lead, and actively participate in SQF, customer, FDA, and other regulatory audits, ensuring strong audit outcomes and timely closure of corrective actions to maintain approved supplier status.
  • Oversee and maintain all quality and food safety documentation, records, and data to ensure accuracy, traceability, and efficient information flow to plant leadership and customers.
  • Conduct internal audits, gap assessments, and risk evaluations to proactively identify food safety risks and drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Ensure effective investigation management, root cause analysis, change control, and CAPA implementation, including trending and verification to prevent repeat non-conformances.
  • Strengthen traceability systems, recall readiness, and mock recall performance.
  • Improve supplier approval, ingredient verification, and packaging compliance programs.
  • Review product specifications regularly to ensure compliance with regulatory, customer, and internal requirements.
  • Communicate and lead the facility through legislative and regulatory changes impacting food safety and quality.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Sanitation, Maintenance, and Engineering to ensure food safety is integrated into production processes and facility controls.
  • Train, coach, and develop the Food Safety Technician and broader plant team to reinforce accountability and a strong food safety culture.
  • Monitor, trend, and report food safety and quality KPIs on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, providing leadership with clear visibility into performance.
  • Participate in customer work groups and maintain strong relationships with customers and regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Frequent exposure to manufacturing facility conditions, including noise, dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, and filing systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of food safety and quality leadership experience in a food manufacturing environment (bakery experience preferred).
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience within a food manufacturing plant.
  • Strong working knowledge of HACCP, FSMA, GMPs, allergen management, sanitation programs, and food quality testing.
  • Proven experience working directly with FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated success leading customer, regulatory, and GFSI audits.
  • Strong analytical and statistical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and influence change in a fast-paced production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PCQI certification
  • SQF Practitioner and/or Lead Auditor experience
  • Experience strengthening or turning around food safety programs
