Job Description

Vertekal is seeking Java Developers across all experience tiers - Junior, Mid‑Level, Senior, and Subject Matter Expert (SME) - to design, build, and enhance secure, mission‑critical systems for U.S. defense and intelligence customers. You will contribute to or lead the development of backend services, distributed workloads, and resilient microservice architectures aligned with strict DoD and IC performance, security, and compliance requirements.

Depending on your level, you may collaborate closely with senior engineers, operate independently to deliver complex services, or shape enterprise‑wide software engineering and architectural direction that directly impacts national security missions.

Junior Developers: 0–5 years of experience

Mid‑Level Developers: 5–10 years of experience

Senior Developers: ~10 years of experience

Subject Matter Experts (SMEs): 13+ years of experience

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
• Active TS/SCI clearance with polygraph eligibility
• Hands‑on experience developing applications using Java with strong proficiency in Spring and Spring Boot, including building REST APIs and microservices
• Understanding of secure coding best practices and mission‑focused engineering
• Familiarity with Git, CI/CD workflows, Agile development, and containerized environments

Junior (0–5 Years)

• Foundational knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, object‑oriented programming, and RESTful development
• Exposure to SQL/No

• Basic understanding of CI/CD concepts, testing, and debugging
• Strong willingness to learn and collaborate in secure, mission‑driven environments

Mid‑Level (5–10 Years)

• Proficiency building and maintaining Spring Boot microservices and backend systems
• Experience integrating applications with databases, message queues, and external services
• Ability to optimize performance, scalability, and reliability
• Comfort mentoring junior developers and participating in architectural discussions
• Experience with containerized development (e.g., Docker) and secure environments (RMF, DoD SRG)

Senior (~10 Years)

• Deep expertise in Java, Spring ecosystem, microservices, and distributed architectures
• Experience leading the design and development of enterprise‑grade applications
• Strong background with Kubernetes/Docker and cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Advanced knowledge of secure engineering, high‑availability patterns, and cybersecurity principles
• Ability to guide technical decisions and mentor engineering teams

SME (13+ Years)

• Recognized expert in Java/Spring‑based enterprise architectures
• Proven leadership designing complex distributed systems at scale
• Ability to lead multi‑team engineering efforts and influence solution architecture
• Extensive experience operating in highly secure DoD/IC development environments

Responsibilities Junior Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance Java/Spring Boot features under senior guidance
• Write clean, maintainable code and support integration activities
• Assist with testing, debugging, and documenting technical components
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and code reviews

Mid‑Level Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and optimize Spring Boot microservices and backend components
• Integrate applications with databases, queues, and external services
• Troubleshoot complex issues and implement scalable improvements
• Mentor junior developers and support architectural discussions

Senior & SME Responsibilities

• Lead architecture and development of large‑scale, Spring‑based distributed systems
• Define engineering standards, patterns, and secure development practices
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and system optimization
• Develop technical artifacts such as architecture diagrams and design documents
• Mentor teams, drive technical strategy, and collaborate across Dev Ops, cybersecurity, and architecture groups
• Translate mission needs into secure, scalable technical solutions

Work Location

Compensation

20–40% above market rates
