Position Summary
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) invites applications for a fellowship‑trained Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeon to join our growing multidisciplinary program. The successful candidate will join a dynamic academic environment comprising 12 neurosurgeons with expertise across subspecialties, supported by robust clinical, research, and educational infrastructure within the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health.
Neurosurgery services include treatment for aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease, brain tumor treatment, epilepsy and functional neurosurgery, spine and head trauma, hydrocephalus, pituitary and skull base surgery, spinal neurosurgery, pediatric and fetal neurosurgery. The department has expanded in recent years with new neurosurgical faculty and a new outpatient center. UNC Health has acquired the latest technology, including LITT, Robot, and high/low‑intensity focused ultrasound.
The department has established a new peripheral nerve and spinal oncology program and has grown grant funding and philanthropy, improving its standing in national rankings.
- Provide surgical care for patients with epilepsy and movement disorders in close collaboration with neurologists.
- Participate actively in the education and mentorship of residents, fellows, and medical students.
- Contribute to the department’s research mission, focusing on the mechanisms of neurological disorders, the biologic and physiologic basis of neurosurgical interventions, and advancement of surgical techniques for epilepsy and functional disorders.
- Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across UNC’s neuroscience, imaging, and engineering communities.
A research support package including start‑up resources and protected time will be provided in proportion to the candidate’s experience, academic achievements, and funding history.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements- MD or MD/PhD (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
- Board‑certified or board‑eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
- Fellowship training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.
- Ability to work effectively with neurosurgical, critical care, and other clinician partners.
- Candidate must have, or be able to obtain, a medical license in North Carolina and be credentialed to practice medicine at UNC Health Care System.
- Demonstrated expertise in the evaluation and surgical treatment of epilepsy.
- Demonstrated expertise in microelectrode‑guided deep brain stimulation (DBS); expertise in asleep DBS preferred.
- Evidence of a strong clinical track record and commitment to academic productivity.
- For senior candidates, a record of extramural funding, innovation, and impactful publications is highly desirable.
