Be a Tar Heel!:The Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor of Music with expertise in Opera and Voice. We seek a pedagogically innovative and collaborative colleague who will direct UNC Opera and teach studio voice within the context of a broad liberal arts curriculum. This position is particularly well suited to a singer-teacher and opera director who is passionate about working with singers in a performance program that is undergraduate-only and welcomes students with a wide range of musical backgrounds, interests, and levels of prior experience.
UNC Opera typically performs a scenes program in the fall and a full production in the spring. This course emphasizes the musical and dramatic aspects of role preparation and staging, rather than high-concept productions. Candidates with experience teaching across musical genres and styles, including classical, musical theatre, and contemporary vocal repertoire, are especially encouraged to apply.
The Department of Music at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a BMus and BA in Music for undergraduate students and an MA and Ph.D. in Musicology for graduate students. Our educational mission is to teach music majors and non-majors, to connect the study of music to a broader understanding of the world, and to guide graduate students as researchers and teachers. We serve the public by presenting performances and academic lectures by students, faculty, and guest artists and scholars.
We offer over one hundred concerts and recitals each year, and our facilities include a state-of-the-art auditorium with recording capabilities (audio and video) as well as lighting and sound systems. Our 60 full-time and part-time faculty teach approximately 2500 students during the academic year and another 200 during summer school. Through our teaching, research, and creative activities, we share music’s multiplicity of forms and meanings, connecting the study of music to a broader understanding of societies and affirming music’s importance as an expression of humanity.
This is a full-time, teaching-track (non-tenure-track) position with an initial three-year appointment, eligible for renewal and promotion. The teaching assignment will be the equivalent of a 3+3 load, with specific responsibilities distributed among opera direction, private voice instruction, and classroom teaching. The precise distribution of responsibilities will reflect departmental needs and the successful candidate’s areas of expertise.
MinimumEducation and Experience Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
Preferred Qualifications , Competencies, andExperience:
Preference will be given to candidates who hold a D.M.A., Ph.D., or equivalent professional experience. Evidence of successful teaching at the university level preferred.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:Not Applicable.
Special Instructions:A cover letter, curriculum vitae, three links to recent recordings demonstrating the applicant’s vocal and/or musical productions, with recordings preferably from the past five years, and the names and contact information for four references. The committee may solicit additional materials including letters of recommendation, sample teaching materials and/or evaluations, a sample syllabus, and a teaching statement that addresses pedagogical strategies candidates might use in a public university setting where students reflect the varied socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other demographics of the state.
Application review will begin on November 9, 2026.
