Job Duties

The primary purpose of Cogeneration Systems is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instruments, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generate electricity as a byproduct of steam generation.

It can presently supply about 30 percent of the peak campus electrical load.

This position provides an intermediate level skill set in Instrumentation, Controls and Electrical (IC&E). The skill set level for this position allows one to work independently on less complicated equipment and systems or with minimal instruction and direction from Supervisor and/or advanced level technicians.

Duties include but are not limited to: The installation, preventive, predictive, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of the power plant boilers and associated plant auxiliary equipment and fuel handling systems.

(Examples: PLCs, CDS, VFD, VDSs, plant electrical systems consisting of 12.47kV, 4.16kV, 2.3kV, 480V and 120/280V, 480V motor control centers, CEMS, scientific analyzers for water chemistry, steam turbine and diesel generator voltage regulators and governor control systems, electrical protective relaying).

Education:

Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Working Conditions:

Position will work in extreme weather conditions including extreme heat/cold, direct sun, precipitation, and/or wind. Must be able to remain in a single or stationary position for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to ascend/descend stairs in buildings without an elevator. Will require employees to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures.

Operational Requirements:
This position supports the Cogeneration Facility and Manning Drive Steam Plant, which operate 24/7/365 to meet the demands and maintain reliability of the University campus and UNC Hospitals. Events that jeopardize the facility's capacity to produce steam and electricity must be corrected immediately. Therefore, this position may be required to report to work or remain at work during adverse weather events or university/public health emergencies.

This position requires a fundamental understanding of said systems, equipment, and components. It will also allow for development, modification and implementation of daily reports on the DCS. With appropriate training, this position is expected…
