UNC Medical Center Children's OR is a unit with six operating suites, averaging 20-25 cases per day. Our Children's OR staff are able to work in multiple service areas, including Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Oral Maxillofacial, Burns, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Plastics, Urology, and Dental Surgery. The OR uses new, innovative state‑of‑the‑art equipment that reinforces continuous learning opportunities. The Children's OR staff are collegial and supportive of each other.
Surgeons, OR staff, anesthesia team and all ancillary services work together daily to provide high quality care for the most acute pediatric patients in North Carolina.

Summary:
Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of a professional nurse. The ST possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a surgeon's performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.
The ST who has a dual function in the operating room and the ambulatory setting demonstrates competency in the care of surgical patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgical clinic setting.
Perform all the duties and responsibilities of Surgical Technologist 1‑B.Provide leadership at unit level to correct safety/clinical quality deficiencies and lead/implement changes at the unit level.Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and student operating room technologists; present or teach at the surgical service/Hospital/Health System level.Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff members, coaching the team to anticipate resources.Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols at the surgical unit level; communicate effectively with patients, staff, and physicians; assist in Kaizen projects to improve resource utilization.Assume responsibility for self and reinforce policies, procedures, and safety practices of the OR and Hospital; complete precepting course and assist in training new hires.Use critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and perform other duties as required; provide leadership as chief resource.Demonstrate advanced knowledge and practice of aseptic and surgical technique; collaborate with Team Coordinator to perform checks, maintenance, and control of surgical supplies, trays, and equipment.Demonstrate advanced knowledge related to OR emergency situations; be familiar with and help troubleshoot service‑specific specialty equipment.Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and protocols at the department level; perform duties as clinical assistant to the surgeon for all service‑specific cases, assisting with room set‑up and turnaround.Obtain Yellow Belt status and develop processes to improve cost containment and decrease waste in the room.Pass instruments, supplies, and sutures to operative team members for any surgical specialty when needed.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required; check daily schedule in advance for any special needs, such as prior‑day set‑up or special supplies.Act as a liaison with CPD regarding instrumentation issues; continue creation, updating, and instrument reduction of service‑specific trays via the Censitrac system.Work to standardize service‑specific trays.Other InformationEducation Requirements:
- Graduation from a Surgical Technology program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification.
- BLS required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
- Senior Surgical Technologist‑A:
