Summary

Responsible for planning and coordinating the ECMO clinical operations. In addition, this role is responsible for technical expertise, database management, outcome measures, ECMO transport, education and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities
  • Financial Management – assure financial accountability for the department. Review Monthly Financial statements and enter comments in STRATA budget and accounting program. Plan and review annual operating and capital budgets with division director. Assist in monitoring inventory and review service/maintenance contracts where appropriate.
  • Human Resource Management – assure adequate quality and efficiency of staff by adhering to UNC Health Care standards for recruitment, retention, and department productivity measures. Ensure staff competency and assist with staff professional development via continuing education events, literature, and seminars. Complete annual performance evaluations of all staff. Ensure workers are engaged in program, unit and organization‑wide goals. Maintain state‑mandated certifications for advanced practice and complete personnel files for all employees managing patients on ECMO.
  • Leadership – ensure high customer satisfaction. Advocate for consumers, especially vulnerable or at‑risk populations. Collaborate with physicians, nurses and perfusionists to improve customer service across the health system. Represent UNC Healthcare at national, state and local levels through professional associations. Provide clinical direction, procedural expertise and support in all areas of ECMO. Serve as a resource to ECMO staff, give periodic review and feedback, supervise, counsel, coach and evaluate departmental staff.

    Participate in developing, implementing and revising performance plans, unit or area goals, and daily operations planning.
  • Performance Improvement/Safety – interpret and implement policies and procedures and regulatory standards. Participate in policy & procedure development for ECMO practice. Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards. Communicate with the multidisciplinary ECMO team. Represent UNC Hospitals to the ELSO on all ECMO activities. Maintain adequate supply levels. Rounds on ECMO Specialists weekly and meets monthly with ECMO program medical directors.
  • Professional and Community Activities – represent the ECMO program at division and organizational leadership meetings. Participate actively in professional organizations, including ELSO.
  • Research and Teaching – provide lectures to ECMO Specialists, university departments and house staff. Work with specialists to foster clinical skill development and ongoing advancement.
  • Strategic Planning – determine methods to improve value of care and services at UNC Health Care. Promote customer service through standards aligned with strategic goals. Facilitate program coordination with Departments of Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, Nursing, Perfusion and UNC Health organizations.
Other Information Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, Perfusion Technology, Nursing, or Associate's Degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Professional license (such as RT, RN).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Ten (10) years ECMO experience and Four (4) years supervisor experience in ECMO.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
  • Understand and apply principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized ECMO expertise.
  • Demonstrate progressive leadership skills (charge nurse/therapist, team leader, or other management experience).
  • Assess, interpret and analyze ECMO practice independently and collaboratively.
  • Work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and staff.
  • Work effectively as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Knowledge of current medical, interventional and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of ECMO practice.
