Position Summary

This position is a time-limited role and will continue as funding is secured.

The HR Director position is the lead position meeting the needs of the school as it relates to administrating human resources functions. The position reports to the Associate Dean for Finance and Operations of the School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) and has regular interaction with the Senior Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, faculty, staff and other administrative offices within SCiLL, the College of Arts and Sciences and University Office of Human Resources.

This position provides consultation and guidance to school leadership, faculty and staff to manage the school to meet all human resource needs. This position acts as a liaison with the College of Arts and Sciences Business Office, University’s Office of Human Resources (OHR) and University Compliance Office (UCO) in all areas of human resource management within the school. This is a position of trust that requires handling matters discreetly and professionally.

There is a high level of transactions processed in the school that requires this position to work efficiently, effectively and with a high level of accuracy. Duties include, but not limited to, completing all tasks related to all EHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty permanent and temporary hires, funding swaps, Annual Raise Process (ARP), reappointments, end of appointments, all paid and unpaid leave of absences, benefits, recruitments, managing the appointment promotion and tenure (APT) and post-tenure review processes for faculty positions.

Additionally, this position oversees SHRA permanent and temporary positions, TA/RA/GA graduate student hires, temporary/intermittent temporary/student assistant hires, career banding, time management system (TIM), leave, and benefits.

This position partners with the leadership team to understand and execute the department's human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning. The HR Director will provide support and guidance when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise related to personnel performance, disciplinary or other employee relation matters. This position will manage the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified applicants and collaborates with leaders and faculty to understand skills and competencies required for openings.

In addition, the HR Director will communicate regularly with an array of positions within the department to coordinate payroll efforts for Faculty, Staff and Postdoc positions to secure funding, timelines and paperwork needed to recruit, hire and separate employees.

This position will regularly assess the department's human resources unit and seek changes with support and buy‑in for the improvement of the department's HR related goals, objectives and systems. The HR Director will maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and maintain knowledge of trends, recommend best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.

This position will regularly use tools such as Connect Carolina, People Admin, Law Logix I‑9 system and Info Porte to implement actions, answer inquiries and proactively address potential HR payroll issues.

Education and Experience
  • Demonstrated human resources experience.
  • HR professional certifications (PHR/SPHR, SHRM‑CP/SCP, etc.) preferred
  • Knowledge of People Soft and Infoporte.
  • Thorough knowledge of UNC Policies and Procedures for both SHRA and EHRA positions.
  • Experience in the higher education setting.
  • Experience handling the management and submission of visas (H1B, J1, etc.).
Essential Skills
  • The successful candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, sound business judgment, tact and diplomacy, and the ability to interact with personnel at all levels of the School/Division and University.
