Job SummaryThis position is part of the Network Deployment team responsible for the installation, initial configuration, troubleshooting, and monitoring of a very large enterprise data network. Duties include planning and execution of life‑cycling networking assets across campus, including switching, wireless, and UPS systems. The role responds to critical network events on a 24/7/365 basis on a rotating schedule and works 100% on‑site.
It plays a critical role in the execution of networking projects through subject‑matter expertise, strong project‑management skills, and attention to detail.
- Install and configure enterprise networking equipment (switches, routers, wireless access points, UPS).
- Troubleshoot and resolve network issues, providing face‑to‑face support to customers.
- Execute life‑cycling of network assets, including planning, procurement, deployment, and decommissioning.
- Monitor network performance, perform root‑cause analysis, and document solutions.
- Participate in on‑call, evening, night, and weekend work as schedule requires.
- Drive a State vehicle when necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related technical degree from an accredited institution.
- Or associate’s degree in Electronics or Networking Technology plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination.
- Journey level requires an additional year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.
- Demonstrated work experience in the networking field.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive work relationships in a team environment.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to new technologies on demand.
- Excellent written and oral customer service skills.
- Advanced Layer 1 knowledge (cabling, fiber installation standards, troubleshooting, fiber meter/scope).
- Significant Layer 2 knowledge (STP, LACP, LLDP, MLAG, MVRP, 802.1q).
- Basic Layer 3 knowledge (OSPF).
- Familiarity with PoE standards (802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt).
- Experience with Extreme, Cisco, Aruba, and Arista network operating systems.
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP.
- Experience with network gear life‑cycling (planning and execution).
- Experience in switch configuration templating.
- Experience with data capture and analysis (Wireshark).
- Experience in data center networking (high‑speed PHY, fully meshed configurations).
- Experience in 802.11 wireless technology.
- Experience with Extreme Campus Fabric (SPBM 802.1aq).
Must be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds and climb ladders. Must have or obtain a valid NC driver’s license, as duties require driving a state vehicle.
Schedule RequirementsEvening, night, on‑call, overtime, and weekend work occasionally.
