Claims Counsel – Investors Title Insurance Company

Chapel Hill, NC (hybrid or remote)

Are you a skilled attorney with a strong background in real estate law, title insurance, or litigation? Are you passionate about resolving complex legal matters while making a meaningful impact? We’re looking for a Claims Counsel to join our Claims Department and take the lead in managing and resolving title insurance claims with strategic insight, professionalism, and care.

• Proactively manage complex title insurance claim files, including legal analysis, coverage decisions, and resolution strategies.
• Provide legal guidance to non-attorney claim administrators and assist with claim strategy and policy adherence.
• Collaborate with and direct retained counsel, attending mediations, hearings, and depositions when necessary.
• Participate in company wide claims prevention efforts by identifying patterns, recommending underwriting adjustments, and educating internal and external stakeholders.
• Support the formulation of claims policies and legal resources by assisting with claims manuals and legal research.

• Administer claim files by conducting factual investigations and legal research to evaluate liability and potential recovery.
• Direct and monitor outside counsel while maintaining full ownership of claim outcomes.
• Establish and maintain appropriate reserves and documentation in the claims tracking system.
• Communicate effectively with claimants, attorneys, agents, and insured parties to provide status updates and resolve matters efficiently.
• Support internal claims prevention initiatives, including speaking engagements and education of agency staff and partners.
• Contribute to department strategy through legal policy updates and best practice development.

• JD from an accredited law school with a strong academic record.
• Minimum 4+ years of legal experience in real estate law, litigation, title insurance, or a related practice; or 2+ years direct title insurance claims or underwriting experience.
• Knowledge of real estate closings, foreclosures, collections, and bankruptcy.
• Strong negotiation skills with the ability to deliver sensitive information diplomatically.
• Analytical thinker with sound business and legal judgment.
• Excellent written communication, research, and time management skills.
• High attention to detail while maintaining efficiency and focus on resolution.
• Public speaking experience and the ability to present claims trends and prevention strategies.
