Great Outdoor Provision Co. – Chapel Hill Shop

Great Outdoor Provision Co. is looking for a passionate and experienced fly fishing team member to help lead and grow our fly fishing department in Chapel Hill.

This is a hands‑on retail leadership role for someone who genuinely loves fly fishing and enjoys helping others learn, explore, and get outside. We’re especially interested in candidates who bring both strong customer service instincts and authentic enthusiasm for the sport.

Internally, this role is known as a Product Manager Contact (PMC). The PMC serves as the Chapel Hill shop’s lead fly fishing team member and primary connection to GOPC’s Fly Fishing Product Manager, who is based in Raleigh and works with all GOPC shops to help guide the company’s overall fly fishing assortment, vendor relationships, and product direction.

This role carries significant responsibility for the day‑to‑day strength of the Chapel Hill fly fishing department, including merchandising, inventory flow, customer engagement, staff education, and communication with GOPC’s broader fly fishing leadership team.

The PMC is responsible for ordering and replenishing the Chapel Hill shop’s flies and spooled fly tying materials, while collaborating with GOPC’s Fly Fishing Product Manager on the broader department assortment.

This role offers meaningful opportunity to help shape and grow fly fishing within the Chapel Hill shop and surrounding community.

This is not a corporate management position. It’s a specialty outdoor retail role centered around product knowledge, hospitality, teamwork, and stewardship of an important department within the shop.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Have hands‑on fly fishing experience, particularly in freshwater fisheries common to the Southeast
  • Enjoy helping both beginners and experienced anglers

  • Take pride in maintaining an organized, well‑stocked, visually compelling department
  • Communicate clearly and work well as part of a team
  • Enjoy sharing product knowledge and helping train teammates
  • Care deeply about customer experience and community connection
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist customers with fly rods, reels, lines, flies, waders, packs, accessories, and rigging
  • Help maintain a well‑stocked, organized, and visually compelling fly fishing department
  • Order and replenish the Chapel Hill shop’s flies and select spooled fly tying materials while communicating customer feedback, product trends, and broader department needs to GOPC’s Fly Fishing Product Manager
  • Maintain strong connections within the local and regional fly fishing community
  • Participate in merchandising, restocking, seasonal product flow, and department upkeep
  • Help train and support fellow staff members on fly fishing products and techniques
  • Maintain department materials including signage, product information, and merchandising aids
  • Support special orders, vendor communication, and customer follow‑through when needed
  • Plan and lead occasional fly tying classes, clinics, and community events that support and grow the local fly fishing community
  • Serve customers throughout the entire store and contribute to the success of the overall team

  • Fly shop or outdoor retail experience
  • Trout, bass, saltwater, or warmwater fly fishing
  • Fly tying
  • Guiding or instruction
  • Merchandising or inventory experience
  • Conservation or fisheries involvement
  • Experience helping newer anglers feel welcome and confident
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
  • Part‑time or full‑time opportunities may be available for the right candidate
  • Weekend availability is important
  • Starting at $16/hour, with higher compensation possible based on experience, responsibilities, and outdoor expertise
