SummaryPerforms general security work in the protection of persons and property. Provides support with enforcement of UNC Health security and safety regulations. Prepares reports and maintains proficiency in the department’s current report writing system. Gathers information, including video monitoring. Serves in specialized unit assignments and assists the organization to ensure adherence of applicable federal, state and local laws.
Responsibilities- Communications – Communicates effectively via two‑way radio, computer, email, telephone and verbal communications within the Hospital Police Department, and with other law enforcement agencies, hospital staff, visitors and patients.
- Emergency Response – Assists with mental‑health patient custody issues, arranges transportation and escorts patients to units, responds to calls for assistance with patient, visitor or employee behavior issues, provides backup to hospital police officers, and responds promptly to smoke, trouble or fire alarms. Participates in the Emergency Response Team to access or secure areas during emergencies.
- Fixed Post Functions – Controls patient and visitor entry in the ED, operates a metal screening system, maintains parking lot surveillance, and manages after‑hours access at the night entrance. Staffs other posts as needed.
- Investigations and Incident Report Writing – Completes trepass, patient intervention and use‑of‑force reports with a full narrative in the department’s records management system. Takes custody of items found, secures them properly, initiates risk assessments on DOC inmates, patients and employees.
- Patrol – Submits daily activity logs, patrols assigned areas, escorts employees, patients and visitors to parking areas, provides after‑hours access to secured areas, collects inventories, secures patient property, documents hazards, locks/unlocks doors, handles deceased bodies, transports patient commitment documents, and challenges suspicious persons.
- Traffic Control – Conducts parking surveys, enforces parking regulations, initiates towing as required, reports equipment malfunctions, and writes citations to illegally parked or unauthorized vehicles proactively.
- Education Requirements – High School diploma or GED.
- Licensure/Certification Requirements – Valid North Carolina driver’s license with required driving record, CPR certification prior to 12 months of employment.
- Professional Experience Requirements – One (1) year of previous work experience.
- Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements – Proficient oral and written communication; basic computer skills.
