Work Schedule

Workplace Overview

Ported to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this role supports Cogeneration Systems, powering campus buildings and UNC Hospitals. The system supplies about 30 % of peak campus electricity and critical steam for heating, cooling, sterilization, and water production.

Position Summary

Sign‑On Bonus: A $5,838 sign‑on bonus is available for the successful candidate, paid in two installments within 12 months of hire: $2,919 within 30 days of hire date and $2,919 12 months after hire date.

This intermediate (journeyman) Electronics Specialist, Instrumentation‑Controls‑Electronics (IC&E) is responsible for installation, preventive, predictive, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of boilers and associated balance‑of‑plant auxiliary equipment and fuel handling systems. Duties cover PLCs, CDSS, VFDs, VDSs, plant electrical systems (12.47 kV, 4.16 kV, 2.3 kV, 480 V, 120/280 V, 480 V motor control centers), CEMS, scientific analyzers, steam turbine and diesel generator voltage regulators, governor control systems, and electrical protective relaying.

The role also handles instrument air, fans, pumps, valves, control valves, mills, cooling towers, fluid drives, air compressors, water treatment systems, bag houses, fuel handling systems, stack lights, and railroad crossing signals. The technician will perform minimal program modifications, revise control graphics, tune PLCs/DCS loops, and develop daily reports. With training, the position will become familiar with EPA and DAQ regulatory requirements for CEMS.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in electronics or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

Experience repairing and maintaining electrical/electronic equipment or systems; valid North Carolina driver’s license (or ability to obtain prior to hire); participation in rotational on‑call duty; ability to work in extreme weather conditions; ability to remain in a single or stationary location for extended periods; ability to ascend/descend stairs where no elevator exists; and capability to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with appropriate PPE per established procedures.

Preferred Qualifications and Competencies

Additional experience repairing and maintaining electrical/electronic equipment or systems; and the same operational and safety qualifications as required.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid NC Driver’s License.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

The facility operates 24/7 to meet campus and hospital demands. This role is designated as an emergency duty, adverse weather, and communicable disease mandatory position. The technician is expected to report or remain at work during adverse weather, university emergencies, or communicable disease outbreaks, and to participate in on‑call rotation for after‑hours and weekend emergencies.
