Position Title: Electronics Specialist – Journey (Working Title Life Safety Technician)

Salary Range: $52,549 - $74,585

Location: Chapel Hill, NC

Position Summary

Provide critical maintenance and repair of Life Safety, Fire Detection and Suppression, Security, CCTV, and other electronic systems. Five positions are available and the role may be eligible for a sign‑on bonus of $4,919, paid in two installments within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance (PM) inspections on Life Safety systems, Fire Detection and Suppression, Security, CCTV, Equipment Monitoring Systems, and other electronic systems.
  • Install and modify Life Safety, fire detection and suppression systems, Card Access, Security, CCTV, and Equipment Monitoring Systems.
  • Conduct PMs and repairs in accordance with NFPA 12A, NFPA 25, NFPA 72, and the International Fire Code.
  • Obtain and maintain licensure to inspect systems per the N.C. State Board of Examiners and required NICET Level II certifications.
  • Provide support for BSL 2+ and BSL 3 laboratories, including medical clearance, respiratory protection, and training.
  • Serve as a mandatory employee when essential University operations demand presence, even during adverse weather or emergencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in electronics or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications
  • Deep knowledge of electronic technology theory and its application at the circuit board level.
  • Proficiency with computer operating systems, diagnostic software, and programmatic configuration of micro‑processor based systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of NFPA, NEC, NCBC, NCDOI, NC SCO, IFC, and ADA codes and regulations.
  • Recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry, with programming, service, and repair of fire detection and suppression systems (sprinklers, standpipes, fire pumps, chemical suppression).
  • Ability to support BSL 2+ and BSL 3 labs, including physical and medical requirements.
  • Availability to work as a mandatory employee during critical University operations.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Progressive experience in the Fire Alarm industry.
  • Factory certification by at least two major fire alarm manufacturers.
  • Experience reviewing design phases of building projects for life safety systems.
  • Experience managing workload, scheduling, and emergency requests.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Fire Sprinkler Inspection Technician License (NC State Board of Examiners).
  • Fire Sprinkler Maintenance Technician License.
  • NICET Level II certifications in Inspection and Testing of Water‑Based Systems and Fire Alarm Systems.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Ability to stand for long periods, work from lifts or ladders up to 10 ft, crawl under buildings, enter manholes, work in confined spaces, stoop, squat, and move objects weighing 40 lb or more overhead.

Sign‑On Bonus

Eligible for a $4,919 sign‑on bonus paid in two installments: $2,459.50 within 30 days of hire and $2, months after hire, contingent on budget and final eligibility determination.
