Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Service Line team in Charleston, South Carolina. Join us at S&ME!

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you will build your skills in construction materials testing across soil, concrete, asphalt, and other materials while working toward key industry certifications. In this role, you’ll spend much of your time outdoors, supporting active projects and helping ensure their quality and safety. You’ll see your impact firsthand as projects progress and grow your technical expertise along the way.

Day‑to‑Day:
  • Plan Review: Examine construction plans and specifications to ensure they align perfectly with on‑site conditions.
  • Material Testing: Perform and oversee tests and inspections on construction materials, including soil, concrete, asphalt, and more, to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Software Utilization: Use advanced software like Metafield to accurately document and report testing results.
  • Equipment Calibration: Calibrate testing equipment to industry standards to guarantee precise and reliable results.
  • Special Inspections: Conduct special inspections to ensure regulatory compliance and uphold quality assurance on all projects.
What You Bring:
  • A High School diploma/GED
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • One(1) or more active certifications:
    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I;
      Strength Testing Technician;
      Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure
  • Experience with metals/steel inspection or being an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a plus
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company‑provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40‑50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
