The Chief of Medicine will play an integral role in the management, growth, and future direction of the Medicine Service at our growing 1A VAMC facility. The Medicine service at the Ralph H. Johnson VA includes Cardiology, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Hospital Medicine, Nephrology, Pulmonology, and Rheumatology. The Chief collaborates with other Service Chiefs and program managers in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Assumes responsibility for the overall management of the Medicine Service. This includes the organization of the administrative day-to-day activities of the Medicine department.

Provides leadership and accountability for all aspects of the service, assuring support of the mission and values of this health care system and VISN.

Assumes responsibility for carrying out the goals, objectives, and plans and policies established by the Health Care System Director.

Ensures the service functions as an integrated care delivery system, providing a full continuum of patient-focused Medicine Services for Veterans.

Utilizes data about providers and available resources to formulate strategic short-term and long-range plans and goals for the service and to address deficiencies.

Plans, implements, and manages the Performance Improvement/QM programs within the medicine department.

Formulates and implements general policies, procedures, standards, and goals and objectives for the Medicine Service that are consistent with, and supportive of, the mission of the health care system and VISN 7.

Coordinates and integrates the interdepartmental functioning of Medicine Service. This includes chairing relevant meetings.

Completes performance appraisals and serves as the approving official for the ratings of the Medicine Service providers and support staff.

Participates in National Collaborative activities including Medicine related meetings and others as assigned by the Chief of Staff.
