Psychiatrist Assistant Chief Mental Health – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Base pay range: $/yr – $/yr
SummaryPosition eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Must meet eligibility requirements and submit application within four months of appointment. Award amount up to $200,000 over 1–5 years. Former participants are ineligible.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship, except for rare non‑citizen exceptions.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent (DO) degree from an approved VA‑school.
- Full and unrestricted medical/surgery license in one U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth or D.C.
- Completed an accredited residency training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME or AOA or qualified non‑U.S. residency).
- Fully licensed physician (not a training license); may be appointed as a Physician Resident Provider (PRP) on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

- Provide broad assistance to the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health in defining the mission and vision of the Mental Health program, developing scope of practice, designing plans of care, and implementing quality improvement measures.
- Help develop, plan, clarify, administer, and manage the Mental Health Service Line at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System.
- Design service priorities and supervise programs including inpatient, outpatient, residential rehabilitation, and community‑based outpatient clinics.
- Supervise and evaluate performance of staff assigned to these programs.
- Make independent professional decisions and recommendations with infrequent supervisory guidance.
- Advise management on specific clinical or administrative issues within the Mental Health Service Line and the Medical Center.
- Serve as consultant and advisor to subordinates, peers, and administration.
- Perform psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population, including geriatric and post‑deployment combat veterans with psychiatric and psychosocial challenges.
- Provide full range of therapeutic interventions: diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of psychiatric patients.
- Ensure practice of psychiatric medicine aligns with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, clinical guidelines, and mandatory continuing education.
- Offer psycho‑diagnostic services and determine appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques.
- Order diagnostic tests and consultations, differentiate normal from abnormal findings, and make treatment decisions.
- Participate in supervision and teaching for the psychiatric residency program.
- Perform on‑call duties, as needed.
