Position Description
The College of Charleston Department of Music invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities, beginning August 16, 2026. The position’s responsibilities include conducting the Concert Choir, directing the Master of Arts in Teaching-Performing Arts program, and teaching graduate-level choral conducting and undergraduate elective courses according to departmental need. Candidates with a secondary expertise in specialized choral traditions (e.g. gospel choir, early music) are especially welcome.
The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the Music Department’s recruiting program.
Qualifications
Graduate degree in Choral Conducting or similar field required; doctoral degree ( DMA ) preferred. Demonstrated record of successful university-level and/or high-level high school choral teaching experience required. Preferred qualifications include experience and training in vocal pedagogy, experience teaching in a K12 environment.
About the program
The Music Department offers a BA in Music with three concentrations (Performance, Composition, Music History and Culture) and a Master of Arts in Teaching-Performing Arts with an emphasis in Choral Conducting. Student performing opportunities in voice include Concert Choir, Gospel Choir, a robust opera program, and solo performance. All auditioned and non-auditioned performance opportunities are open to students of all majors.
College ensembles regularly collaborate with local professional performing organizations including the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Charleston Opera Theater. The Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto Festivals, held in Charleston each spring, bring international performances to the city and provide additional performing and professional development opportunities for our faculty and students alike.
