Field Tech - Power Systems Tech I, II, III, or IV

Position Summary

Field Tech
- Power Systems Technicians or NETA Technicians are expected to perform service, test, and maintain various types of power transmission and distribution equipment.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start‑up and collect data of low, medium, and/or high voltage (to 500 kV) electrical systems.
  • Low, medium and/or high voltage switch gear and circuit breaker testing.
  • Inspect, maintain, test, and repair transformers, circuit breakers and all related equipment – 45 kVA to 130 MVA, dry type and/or oil filled.
  • Maintain, test, recondition, and repair circuit breakers – low voltage 480 V (molded case and air‑magnetic), medium voltage up to 15 kV (air‑magnetic and vacuum).
  • Experience with SF6‑filled equipment and gas‑insulated switch gear (desired but not required).
  • Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.
  • Operate high voltage test equipment including Doble Power Factor test sets.
  • Start‑up, troubleshoot and repair services on controls and transfer schemes.
  • Rotate emergency on‑call duty and respond to customer emergencies promptly.
  • Perform all work and decisions in strict compliance with regulatory laws.
  • Other duties as assigned by manager.
Required Experience and Qualifications for a Power Systems Tech I
  • High School diploma/GED and minimum 1 year of related experience.
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as NETA, NEC, OSHA, NFPA.
  • Prefer experience with MCC’s, breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, start‑up on switch gear up through 500 kV, or military training (Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, NAVY).
  • Ability to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.
  • Good theoretical understanding of electricity and aptitude for problem solving.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with customers and peers.
  • Dependable, responsible with good judgment and organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service, time management and follow‑up skills.
  • Work effectively with customers, peers, and management to resolve client issues.
  • Strong computer skills; working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet research for standards/products/manufacturers.
  • Valid driver’s license required for positions that utilize a company vehicle.
Required Experience and Qualifications for a Power Systems Tech II
  • High School diploma/GED and minimum 2 years of related experience.
  • NETA Level II Certification.
  • Performs testing and service work under direct supervision; sufficient knowledge to ensure personal safety. Knowledge of lock‑out/tag‑out procedures, arc‑flash and shock hazard analyses, and electrical energy control procedures.
  • Same preferences and requirements as Tech I.
Required Experience and Qualifications for a Power Systems Tech III
  • High School diploma/GED and minimum 5 years of related experience.
  • NETA Level III Certification.
  • Performs testing and service work, mentors and leads Level I and II technicians. Responsible for performance, management of routine and moderately complex tasks, record keeping, evaluation of test data, and safety of others. Qualified to provide guidance and perform electrical power switching.
  • Same preferences and requirements as Tech I.
Required Experience and Qualifications for a Power Systems Tech IV
  • Associate degree in a related field or equivalence and minimum 5–10 years of related experience.
  • NETA Level IV Certification.
  • Performs testing and service work, mentors Level I–III technicians, supervises large projects and multiple crews, works independently. Conducts complex investigations, tests, evaluations, and prepares written reports.
  • Same preferences and requirements as Tech I.
Required Experience and Qualifications for a Sr. Field Tech
  • High School diploma/GED or equivalent experience and 5 years in a related field.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and industry standards such as NETA, OSHA, IEEE, and NFPA.
  • Strong background in high voltage equipment up to 230 kV class.
  • Prefer experience with MCC’s, breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, start‑up on switch gear up through 500 kV, or military training.
