As a Staff Geotechnical Engineer in the performance-based design group within the Geotechnical discipline, you will be involved in various aspects of our geotechnical services. Your responsibilities will include conducting field investigations, construction monitoring, and performing a range of geotechnical analyses. Your technical expertise will play a key role in developing project designs and solutions for highly visible projects of all sizes.
Additionally, this position may involve providing support to our geotechnical teams in other locations as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct geotechnical field explorations and collect samples.
- Perform geotechnical construction observation for earthwork, foundations, and supports of excavation, and prepare field reports.
- Perform geotechnical analyses, which may include:
- Conventional analysis such as slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, shallow and deep foundation design, and ground improvement.
- 2D/3D numerical modeling for nonlinear deformation analysis of free-field scenarios or soil-structure interaction problems under both static and dynamic loading conditions
- Seismic analyses, including SPT/CPT-based liquefaction evaluations, 1D ground response analysis, and both probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard analysis.
- Collaborate with remote team members to support challenging projects nationwide.
- Provide in-person support to geotechnical teams at other locations as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering required;
Master’s or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering preferred. - Familiarity with one or more of the following is preferred:
- Conventional geotechnical analysis (e.g., slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, shallow and deep foundations) and relevant software (e.g. LPile, Settle3, Slope/W, etc.)
- Ground improvement techniques such as stone columns, deep soil mixing, and rigid inclusions.
- Numerical modeling software (e.g., FLAC and PLAXIS), advanced constitutive models (e.g., PM4
Sand and PM4
Silt), static and dynamic nonlinear deformation analysis of free-field and soil-structure interaction problems. - Probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard analysis, including seismic source characterization models, ground-motion characterization models, and related software (e.g., nshmp-haz, HAZ, and OpenSHA).
- 1D ground response analysis
- Programming languages such as Python
- Proven problem-solving and professional-level verbal and written communication abilities.
- Strong organizational skills with the capacity to work efficiently to meet project deadlines.
