Position Summary

Seeking an Estimator I who can perform detailed CAD-based takeoffs and material quantification to support the estimating team. The right candidate will be able to take a set of plans and CAD files, reverse engineer them, and produce accurate quantities such as:

  • Total linear feet of pipe
  • Total curb & gutter footage
  • Cubic yards of dirt/earthwork

This role is ideal for someone coming from an engineering firm, surveying company, or construction background who already has practical CAD experience and wants a long-term career path in estimating. With steady performance, this position will grow into a full Estimator role within 6–8 years. Depending on their technical background, the title Junior Engineer could also apply.

Ideal Candidates
  • Surveying Companies:
Survey techs or CAD operators who perform plan work and takeoffs but may be looking for a career with more growth potential.
  • Engineering Firms:
Junior engineers, CAD designers, or civil technicians with practical CAD and plan‑reading experience.
  • Construction Firms: CAD specialists or junior estimator assistants who are ready to step into a structured career path.
Key Responsibilities
  • CAD Software Expertise:
Proficient with tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Micro Station, and Agtek (earthwork takeoffs).
  • Plan Analysis:
Ability to review plans and CAD files, interpret grading, drainage, and site layout, and extract quantities.
  • Quantity Takeoffs:
Accurately calculate materials including pipe, curb & gutter, and earthwork.
  • Problem Solving:
Apply analytical skills to ensure calculations are precise and align with industry standards.
  • Support Role:
Assist senior estimators with bid document preparation, design clarifications, and cost estimate development.
  • Learning & Growth:
Commit to developing advanced estimating skills over time, eventually taking ownership of estimates.
Position Requirements
  • Formal degree is not required. Candidates may have a technical degree, certification, or simply proven hands‑on CAD and takeoff experience.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to produce accurate, usable takeoff data with minimal oversight.
  • Strong math and measurement skills, attention to detail, and ability to work within deadlines.
Education & Experience
  • 1–3 years of professional CAD experience in an engineering, surveying, or construction firm (not classroom‑only).
  • Prior work involving plan reading, material takeoffs, or site layout interpretation.
  • Exposure to cost estimation or project planning is a plus.
  • Experience with surveying tools or software (e.g., Trimble, Leica) is beneficial, especially from surveying companies.
Physical Requirements
  • Work involves sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time in various adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to wear personal PPE when on an active construction site (hard hat, glasses, gloves, and vest).
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
