Job Description

Summary:

The Biomedical Informatics program at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a programmer/developer to support the Cancer Center Shared Resource (CIDER) program. The role involves programming and data science research development in Python and R, building infrastructure for machine learning projects, managing server environments, extracting and processing data, documenting code, and collaborating with research teams to prepare reports, publications, and presentations throughout the grant process.

• 35% Perform data science research development tasks, including programming in Python and R for biomedical research projects emphasizing natural language processing and advanced AI techniques such as deep learning and large language models.
• 20% Assist in setting up infrastructure for machine learning projects, including creating Python environments, installing necessary packages, configuring Docker containers, documenting the setup, and preparing server environments.
• 20% Help with data extraction and processing for machine learning, research, or operational projects, including handling research and operational data requests, consultations, and delivery.
• 10% Document code and methods, explain procedures to researchers, and prepare detailed descriptions for grants and publications; communicate methods through presentations and train staff, graduate assistants, or student employees.
• 10% Prepare reports for colleagues, leadership, and scientific publications and presentations.
• 5% Collaborate with team members and project managers through meetings and programming to ensure timely completion of tasks.

A high school diploma and three years of work experience in the modification and maintenance of system programs, design and development of system software, or testing and debugging of system software. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field is acceptable in lieu of the required work experience.

Continuous 6‑8 hours per shift:
Ability to perform job functions in an upright or seated position, walk/mobile, work indoors, perform repetitive motions, reach in all directions, maintain tactile sensation, lift 15 lbs. Frequently:
Walk, sit, lift objects, push/pull 15 lbs., perform fine motor movements. Occasional:
Work in confined spaces, dusty areas.
