Job Purpose: Supervise and work with a crew of groundskeepers in the performance of their duties.

Minimum Requirements: Must have a High School diploma or GED. Must have a valid South Carolina Driver’s License. Must have two years of experience in grounds maintenance, with at least one year in a supervisory position. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have thorough knowledge of all phases of landscape work. Must have knowledge of proper use and care of power and hand tools. Basic knowledge of irrigation systems is preferred. Must be able to direct, assign, and motivate others. Must be reliable and responsible. Must have effective oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of OSHA regulations preferred.

Additional Comments Regarding Position: Must be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and be in good physical condition to perform duties as described. Some work after normal hours and call back may be required. Required to be on campus immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, etc. A valid SC driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment is preferred.

• Specifically oversees and works with a grounds maintenance crew in the performance of duties such as maintaining lawns, flowerbeds, shrubbery, mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, mulching, seeding, planting and transplanting according to schedules.
• Instructs crews on procedures for tree, shrub, and lawn care, including water and fertilizer applications, and assists with watering new or existing plant material as needed.
• Taught crew maintenance techniques and safe use of power and hand tools per OSHA requirements.
• Drives college vehicles transporting crews and equipment; responsible for vehicle condition and maintenance.
• Manages and repairs a complex irrigation system.
• Maintains all power equipment, performing oil changes, filter installations, blade sharpening, etc.
• Assumes acting supervisor role in absence of both grounds supervisor and assistant grounds supervisor.
