**** General Nature of Work
** Directs large, complex research projects in a bench research setting.
** Guidelines for Class Use/Distinguishing Characteristics
** This class is used for the highest-level positions in research settings.
** Examples of Work
** Develops new research projects according to concepts provided by principal investigators. Oversees the activities of employees, graduate assistants and others engaged in research or related activities. Teaches and participates in complex laboratory research procedures. Operates, maintains and repairs complex scientific equipment. Plans and organizes research and evaluation of scientific literature. Expert skills in cell and molecular biology are expected. Expertise is cell culture, immunoblotting, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry, microscopy/imaging, and qRT-PCR are necessary.
Uses manual and computer techniques to analyze research data. Develops manuscript for publication in rigorous scientific journals. Oversees and performs testing of animals (rodents) for research purposes. Performs IACUC-approved animal procedures for research projects including surgical procedures, blood and tissue collection, oral gavage and injections, and euthanasia. Advises principal investigators and others on research methods, techniques, procedures, and approaches. Functions independently as principal investigator for most research projects.

* Job Duties:
** 20% - Perform variety of cell and molecular biological techniques, record data. Analyze experimental results using appropriate software.
20% - Prepare and organize experimental results for presentation and publication. Rigorous and meticulous development of figures and tables. Writing manuscripts and grants.
15% - Breeding, genotyping, and maintaining of mouse transgenic colonies, surgical procedures, organ collection, and performing functional assessments on rats/mice.
15% - Assist with rodent experiments and clinical studies.
15% - Process tissues & culture of primary cells and cell lines. Conduct experiments using the tissues and cell lines.
15% - Maintain laboratory supplies; prepare media, buffers, and other reagents as needed. Keep complete laboratory records/notebook.
** Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
** Knowledge of the principles, laboratory applications and information sources for the natural sciences. Knowledge of laboratory methods (cell biology, molecular biology, animal models etc…), equipment, facilities and materials. Skill in the operation, maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment. Ability to develop and plan, evaluate and troubleshoot, and to implement effective research methodologies and laboratory procedures. Ability to plan, organize and evaluate the activities of others.
Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to perceive colors normally and make olfactory distinctions.
