HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Installation Technician, Building Maintenance
Under general supervision of the shop foreman or assistants, the incumbent performs skilled trades level duties related to heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration work. Responsibilities include routine repairs, answering trouble calls, analyzing problems, executing corrective actions, participating in outages, and ensuring compliance with EPA and other regulatory agency guidelines. EPA Universal Certification is required. The incumbent will be on call on a rotating basis for one week and work a weekend shift.
Incumbent is considered essential personnel in a disaster. Performs related and non‑related duties as required.
- Maintain work area and job site in a clean, orderly manner and perform miscellaneous duties.
- Supervise and instruct lower‑grade mechanics; brief supervisor on any problems that may affect proper operation of equipment.
- Coordinate repairs and inspections with Energy Management Operator for proper shutdown and startup of air conditioning systems campus‑wide.
- Overhaul compressors, condensers and other equipment as needed; diagnose and repair equipment problems in air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. Use proper tools and electrical meter.
- Recharge air conditioning systems with refrigerants; reset and check operation after power failure; adjust and calibrate pneumatic and electronics controls.
- Install, repair, and inspect HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and associated systems (chillers, cooling towers, DX units, window units, ice machines, hot/cold rooms, motors, controls, pumps, etc.). Ensure no unauthorized gas release into the atmosphere and comply with EPA and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
- High school diploma.
- Three years trade experience directly related to the area of employment.
- EPA‑Universal Certification (or EPA‑approved freon recovery certification if required).
- Valid driver’s license (if required).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- EPA approved freon recovery certification.
- Ability to perform job functions in upright, seated, and walking/mobile positions.
- Ability to climb, work indoors, work outdoors in all weather, work below ground, work from elevated areas, and work in confined/cramped spaces.
- Holds 50 lbs unassisted and can lift 50 lbs assisted.
- Good grip strength, ability to use both hands/arms, perform repetitive motions.
- Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, hearing acuity, peripheral vision, and color discrimination.
- Capable of operating winches, come‑along, and jack equipment.
- Qualified physically for respirator use.
