Position: Tax Audit Clerk Trainee-Revenue-Tax-Kanawha Co.

Responsibilities

  • Examines tax returns and related materials for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Acquires general knowledge of state and federal tax laws and applies independent judgment to audit selection.
  • Corresponds with field personnel, taxpayers, and representatives via written communication, email, fax, phone, and other methods.
  • Provides taxpayer assistance and education on completion of applicable forms and documents.
  • Utilizes the integrated tax system (Gen Tax) to generate audit selections, notify taxpayers, obtain documentation, and ensure correct completion.
  • Performs technical reviews of working documentation before submission.
  • Monitors audit cases and generates necessary letters to notify taxpayers.
  • Generates and maintains reports on audit processes and results; creates reports for outside agencies as directed.
  • Answers incoming calls from taxpayers and field‑based staff; records and maintains itinerary changes for field staff.
  • Researches potential audit candidates from auditor recommendations.
  • Prepares audits for mailing using certified mail and publishes results via Gen Tax.
  • Reviews and tests existing and new Gen Tax functionality, reporting problems or issues.
  • Maintains instructional materials and manuals.
  • Communicates with other agencies, accountants, attorneys, and officials as required.
  • Follows strict confidentiality rules regarding taxpayer information.
  • Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Or:
    High school diploma or equivalent with two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division, or two (2) years of experience providing accounting support and/or clerical office support.
  • Complete work history required.
  • Employment requires a fingerprint‑based criminal background check and tax compliance check.
  • Must provide background check information at the Tax Division's expense.
