Overview

Mansion Director - Office of the Governor - Kanawha Co.

The Governor’s Office is seeking a detail-oriented, highly professional Mansion Director with exceptional writing and communication skills, particularly in the area of formal written correspondence. This individual will serve as a front-facing representative of the Governor’s Mansion, responsible for managing high-level communications, drafting and editing official correspondence, and upholding the tone, voice, and standards of the Office of the Governor. The position also supports event planning, public engagement, and digital communications, all of which require clear and effective messaging.

Responsibilities
  • Compose, edit, and manage official written correspondence on behalf of the First Lady and the Governor’s Office, ensuring accuracy, professionalism, and adherence to established tone and style.
  • Draft letters, thank-you notes, invitations, acknowledgments, and other communications for dignitaries, constituents, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain templates and consistent language for recurring written communications while personalizing as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal staff to gather content and context for accurate messaging.
  • Maintain organized systems (both digital and physical) for correspondence tracking, archiving, and follow-up.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for public inquiries to the Mansion, ensuring timely, respectful written responses.
  • Develop and post social media content aligned with official messaging and brand standards.
  • Support Mansion events, tours, and special functions with event coordination and communication duties, including the creation of event-related materials such as programs, scripts, or signage.
  • Represent the Mansion at public and ceremonial events, maintaining a professional and gracious presence.
  • Assist in preserving the historic integrity of the Mansion, including proper handling of furnishings and artifacts.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace for correspondence, scheduling, and collaborative documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in roles requiring formal written communication, public engagement, or office administration.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with proven ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
  • Familiarity with professional standards for official and governmental correspondence.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple forms of communication, including email, print letters, and digital platforms.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and tone consistency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Gmail, Calendar, etc.).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable interacting with individuals at all levels, including high-profile guests and officials.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience drafting communications in a governmental or political office.
  • Previous involvement in high-profile event coordination or executive support.
  • Background in journalism, public affairs, or constituent services.
Work Environment
  • Full-time, on-site position at the Governor’s Office.
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours required for Mansion events.
  • Some travel or off-site responsibilities may be necessary.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
