The School of Pharmacy Clinical Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Part‑time) Bioinformatics Technician located in Charleston, WV.

About the Opportunity

The purpose of this position is to review and extract data collected from the WV Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Charleston for all drug‑related deaths and enter the data into an online forensic drug database. Data collected will be reviewed for accuracy.

This position provides program, as well as direct internal and external client support services. Responds to inquiries and independently resolves matters of low to moderate complexity. Responsibilities require some judgment, resourcefulness and originality, but diverse guides and precedents are usually available to apply or adapt to the circumstances. Work effort has considerable impact on client services, program and project image, with potential legal liabilities.

What

you’ll do
  • Review patient/decedent files and medical records kept in the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and extract and compile the appropriate information needed for the online database (e.g., toxicology findings, autopsy report findings, death certificate data, etc.).
  • Enter alphabetic and numeric data. Compare and correct necessary data.
  • Identify missing data and report findings to the medical examiner (on site) and the pharmacy professor.
  • May file and/or operate photocopier, shredder and other office equipment as necessary.
  • Assist functional and executive staff with preparation and provision of services.
  • Consult on need, make suggestions and assess outcomes for quality, process compliance, and attainment of expectations.
  • Coordinate tasks and elements of assigned projects, including coordination with another on‑site bioinformatics technician to ensure the project work is completed in a timely manner.
  • Research, compose, type, read, sort, code, process, transmit and file documents (mail, correspondence, forms, etc.).
  • Maintain knowledge of professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility, and adhere to industry and government standards.
  • Develop or maintain applications that process biologically based data into searchable databases for purposes of analysis, calculation, or presentation.

Pay Grade: 15
Work Hours: 15 hrs./week
Work Location: Charleston, WV

Qualifications
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in data analysis.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Knowledge of electronic equipment and computer software and applications.

  • Skilled at managing one’s time.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
