Position Summary

The Community Engagement Manager is responsible for developing and strengthening YWCA Charleston’s relationships with the community, creating and supporting YWCA events, and overseeing volunteer engagement. This role advances YWCA Charleston’s mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all by ensuring community engagement activities are inclusive, equitable, and aligned with organizational goals.

Essential Functions Community Outreach & Relationship Building
  • Establish, maintain, and grow relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, volunteers, and stakeholders.
  • Represent YWCA Charleston at community events and coalitions.
  • Identify collaboration opportunities that increase awareness and participation.
Event & Engagement Management
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute community events, fundraising events, workshops, and volunteer activities.
  • Ensure events are inclusive and aligned with organizational values.
Volunteer Recruitment & Coordination
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and support volunteers.
  • Schedule volunteers and monitor participation.
  • Implement recognition and retention strategies.
Communication & Marketing Support
  • Provide input and support the development of social media posts, newsletters, email campaigns, and website content.
  • Ensure communications are accurate and mission-aligned.
Data Collection & Reporting
  • Track engagement metrics, new connections, and volunteer hours.
  • Prepare reports for leadership and grant requirements.
Collaboration & Inclusivity
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams.
  • Model inclusive and trauma-informed practices.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional, volunteer, or lived experience
    .
  • 3+ years of experience in community engagement, outreach, volunteer coordination, program support, or communications, preferably in nonprofit or community-based settings.
  • Relevant certifications or training (e.g., trauma-informed care, project management, CRM platforms) may substitute for formal education.
  • Experience working with diverse and historically marginalized communities.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and relationship-building.
  • Experience with event planning and volunteer coordination.
  • Proficiency with digital communications, social media, and CRM/database systems (e.g., Salesforce, Blackbaud, or similar).
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and report engagement data.
  • Creative problem-solving, adaptability, and a mission-driven mindset.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Combination of office-based work, in-community engagement, and off-site events.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Local travel within the service area is an essential function of the role; ability to travel independently, with or without reasonable accommodation, is required.
Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of a background check with results meeting the standards required for this position.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
