Employee will be assigned to the Division of Water and Waste Management (DWWM), Water Quality Standards and Assessment Section.

Under general supervision, employee will perform entry level professional work and assist higher level specialists and analysts in support of the WQSAS in both office and field settings. Field related duties will include:

  • The collection of data regarding the physical and chemical properties of water in streams or lakes, assessing riparian and in-stream habitat conditions.
  • Evaluating watershed activities and disturbances.
  • Collecting samples of benthic macroinvertebrate and fish communities.
  • Conducting field reconnaissance for potential sample and assessment locations.
  • Pollutant source tracking.
  • Employee may also provide public education services about the environment to schools, watershed groups, and other requesting entities.

Office related duties include:

  • Data review (QA/QC) and entry of stream and lake assessment information.
  • Assisting high level staff with data analysis and reporting.
  • Working with GIS systems.
  • Summarizing environmental data, scanning assessment documents, and creating tables and graphic output for reporting.
  • Employee will perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
Expectations:
  • Applicant will have experience in the use of personal computers, especially with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS applications, and Global Positioning systems (GPS).
  • Applicant will have experience and/or education in the field of benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and identification, fish sampling and identification, wetlands sampling, and/or water quality sampling.
  • Must be able to read and interpret topographic maps.
  • Must be capable of carrying 30 pounds of equipment over a variety of terrain (including stream crossings) and in varying weather conditions in all seasons.
  • Employee must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in rugged terrain.
  • Experience in trailering and operating small boats is desired.
  • Extensive monthly travel will be required, including overnight travel up to four nights per week every week.
Notes:
  • Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.
  • Applicants without an environmental related degree or environmental work experience will be required to complete and pass the DOP skills test to be eligible for this position.
  • Current DEP employees in the Environmental Resources Associate title have an exemption for the testing requirement but must meet the minimum education and experience requirements for the ERS 1 title.
  • The recommended candidate will be subject to a search of his or her Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) prior to being hired and annually thereafter or as needed.
  • Qualifying applicants will be required to complete an internet based profile assessment to compare the applicant's thinking and reasoning skills, behavioral traits and the occupational interests against the traits determined to be important to the posted position.
