Position: Legal Assistant I to Legal Assistant II - Prosecutor's Office

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney or Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, performs general secretarial and legal support functions. Activities include data entry and management, preparing and processing legal documents, and providing general clerical support such as answering the telephone, opening and routing mail, and providing customer service to those who call, write, or visit the office.

Starting pay is dependent on an applicant's relevant experience.

Applications are accepted until there are sufficient numbers of qualified applications or a qualified candidate is identified. This position could close at any time.

Essential Functions
  • Open criminal, juvenile and civil files in electronic file and case management software. Import, process, and transfer electronic files and media within management systems and continually update files until cases are closed.
  • Prepare subpoenas, writs, and other legal forms and documents and prepare proofs of service as appropriate.
  • File documents with appropriate court, whether electronically or in paper form.
  • Interact in a professional manner with the public, attorneys, victims, witnesses, law enforcement officers, and defendants, whether in person or over the phone.
  • Assist in maintaining calendars and dockets to ensure hearing dates are correctly registered and notice is provided to interested parties, victims, and staff.
  • Process appearances and send discovery.
  • Open, sort, and distribute mail received in both paper and electronic forms.
  • Ability to become certified and proficient in the use of the LEIN system to obtain driving records, vehicle records, firearm records, and criminal histories.
  • May be responsible for the processing of appeals, including tracking appeals files and generating a schedule for briefs to be filed, maintaining files, reviewing communications regarding appeals, keeping statistics, and performing other support tasks related to appeals.
  • Performs a variety of support tasks such as typing forms, reviewing and distributing mail, filing updates to law books, copying, faxing and filing.
  • Other Functions
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education
    :
    High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or greater preferred.

    Experience
    :
    Familiarity with the criminal law process or Michigan Trial Court System and/or experience as a legal secretary is preferred.

    Other Requirements
    :
    Attention to detail, ability to multi-task, comfort and proficiency with computers, willingness and desire to learn, ambitious, ability to work without direct supervision or constant direction, ability to maintain confidentiality, and ability to redirect to task after disruption.

    FLSA Status
    :
    Non-exempt.
